What is luxury vinyl flooring?

Who says luxury has to be high maintenance or expensive? Luxury vinyl flooring is neither and will give you the most value for your decorating dollar. With a high-end style that makes it versatile enough for any room in the house, it's also 100% waterproof, durable, easy to care for, and has a fast and uncomplicated installation.

Sophisticated designs

With true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tile, available in an almost unlimited number of colors and patterns, this is not the same vinyl with flat images that you may remember from decades ago. The images are clear and vibrant with micro beveling and embossing to add depth, dimension, and textured appearances, such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed.

The material can also be cut into long planks to mimic hardwood boards, called vinyl plank flooring, or groutable squares called LVT flooring. Many feel the extra seams add to the realism, and some take it even further by using grout.

Extreme durability

All vinyl is strong, but the luxury version is about five times thicker and should measure at least 8-mm or more. It's also layered and, at the top, is a transparent, strong melamine wear layer to protect the floor from scratches and scuffs. The wear layer also helps keep spills at the top, just waiting to be wiped off.

Any vinyl is also easy to care for with just a daily sweeping and periodic mopping with a manufacturer-approved cleaner. Avoid waxy, shine-promoting substances as they can damage the coating and dull the floor, and if you think you need more shine, seek the advice of a flooring expert.

Installation can also be easy, especially when it's a floating floor. Here, the pieces click together, then hover over the subfloor without any nails or glue needed. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level.
